My company services and installs hot water, steam boilers and high efficiency units (natural gas, propane and oil). We install and services radiant heat systems. We install new plumbing in residential and commercial applications. We also provide services to plumbing problems.

Challenge

Customer called on a late Saturday evening stating that his rental apartment had no heat the entire day, outdoor temperature was dropping drastically, weather men were calling for lots of snow and to boot, tenants had just come home with a newborn baby!

Approach

First thing I did was inspect the boiler. It was an older natural gas steam unit. I did notice; and the homeowner verified that he tried to fix it himself with no luck. Homeowner had replaced the thermocouple, gas valve, main steam vents, low water cut off, pressure troll and thermostat. Shaking my head on why someone would replace practically every part on a boiler, rather than call a professional is beyond me! Anyway, I checked the thermostat and wire continuity, checked for the correct power to the boiler, made sure all safety switches were good.

Solution

Removed temperature gauge and pressure troll, removed and thoroughly cleaned pigtail, re assembled, adjusted pressure that homeowner had increased and turned on switch. Boiler fired and problem solved!
