Case Study

Saved SARCO Vapor Heating System

Challenge

The challenge was a steam system that wouldn’t heat properly and hadn’t for many years, 12 at the very least! What we came to find was truly discomforting. Being obsessed with steam, it physically hurt us to look at this system. Nevertheless, the problems had to be fixed. What we found was the distant remnants of a SARCO Vapor System. The alternating receiver, air eliminator, and check valves, the vital organs of this system, were all long gone. Making things worse, the system had NO main vents, once wet returns that were now well above the boiler water line, and cross over steam from the mains into the dry returns.

Approach

So here was our approach in saving this SARCO Vapor System. The first order of business was the main vents, or lack thereof. Without any main vents, the system easily ran at 9.5 lbs of pressure. Along with adequately sized main vents, a vaporstat was required to properly lower the operating pressure. Yet another issue requiring our attention was cross over steam from the mains into the dry returns. The approach here was lowering the dry return connection below the waterline, as the original boiler waterline was much higher then the newer boiler waterline. Finally, the previously high operating pressures cause the boiler to crack, requiring replacement.

Solution

The solution to this challenge was ultimately new main vents, a vaporstat, re-piping dry return lines, and a new properly sized Burnham steam boiler, resulting in one of the happiest customers we've ever had!
