Broadway Vapor System

Challenge

This was originally an Illinois Vapor system. It was converted to a 2-pipe steam trap system later on. When we arrived the vents in the basement were failing every winter from excessively wet steam. Some radiators also didn't get warm.

Approach

We first looked at the positioning of the steam vents and traps. We found a main vent installed in the wrong location and that 35 of the 40 traps in the building had failed.

Solution

We removed the improperly located vent and installed 2 Gortons at the end of the main return. Then we replaced all of the traps with Tunstall replacement traps. We also replaced the Pressurestat with a Vaporstat set to 1/2psi. After completing all of these tasks the boiler was able to properly heat each radiator, the vents stopped spitting water and the heating bill decreased by a measurable amount.
